Book Review : The Firm (John Grisham)

Mitch McDree is a precocious, and sagacious final year Harvard student who is sitting for placements
during his final year of his law degree. Having a stellar resume and an impeccable grade in a prestigious
university, McDree doesn’t have any shortage of offers from companies vying to hire him. He has 5 offers
from acclaimed firms from Wall Street. However,  amidst all the offers he finds one he can’t resist; an
offer from a small firm in Memphis which promises much more than any firm does, and imporantly Mitch
is the only one to be hired in the firm this year. Mitch, coming from a penurious family, takes the offer,
for a better financial and professional position. But was this an offer of a lifetime, or was it the biggest
 mistake Mitch has ever made?

About the book:

The book is fast paced and at times will get your adrenaline going. Reading this book is like running
through an tortuous maze with a killer on your back. The author writes in a simplistic  way and while
one may not be mesmerized by the books simple writing, the author makes up for this by writing an
engaging book, giving the readers an almost immersive movie like experience; At times I could almost
feel the scenes on the book happening at the back of my mind. Even with such an experience, I was
however little let back by the predictability of the storyline. A person who is attuned to thriller genre
(or has read Sidney Sheldon's books), can easily figure out the story by the first few events of the
book. But, while you may be able to get a sense of how the book ends, the actual ending still remains
a mystery. Also, the passage the book takes to reach the ending is what is more fun than the ending
itself. I give credit to the author for giving the book a sensible conclusion to the plot, unlike few other
mystery novels with preposterous end. (hinting at Murder on the Orient Express).

Warning:

But, if you are looking for a book from which you can take something away with after you put the book
down, then stay away from the book. I would say that, after reading the book, I yearned for a book with
florid and poetic writing / books with meaningful and thought provoking books. After a few days, one
does feel as though there was nothing to look back to. To put in perspective, the book made me feel
like binge watching a season of Narcos: although thoroughly interesting, it doesn’t add any value to my
life. Also, the book may not be a perfect reference to know the culture and trend of the time it was
written. While this book was written in the late 90s, it may not accurately represent the sentiments of
that era, as one does see a tinge of consumerism and avarice for money, which may not be collective
 representative of the era.

Overall, the book is great for it’s genre; an entertaining read that will keep you ripping through pages till
 the book ends.

Movie Review: The Firm 1993

I did get to watch the movie of the same book, hoping perhaps this movie would give the same chills
as when I watched godfather the movie after reading the book, ….but…. umm… yep the movie was
disappointing to say the least. The movie is portrayed as though the director wanted to get by with the
story ASAP:  the story was truncated heavily, and many critical parts of the books plot were changed
for the worse. While I do agree not everything in the book can be incorporated in the movie, it felt as
though movie didn’t do justice to the book. The subtle change of key events of the story really
perplexed me at times *wtf did I even read the book correctly moments*. However, the ending clarified
everything, with a 180 turn it took as compared to the book, it demystified the viewers of the movies
subtle yet incorrigible errors. The ending of the movie was something I found sarcastically humorous
and antic.

My suggestion: Unlike me use the 2 hrs 34 mins for something useful :D
